At the weekend I ventured out in the pouring down rain over to Liverpool and St George's Hall. The hall was holding a vintage fashion and textile fair with around 90 stalls. Most of the stalls were selling vintage clothing however one stall was selling vintage inspired fashion made from modern fabrics in a vintage style. There are a number of different Dressmaking Fabrics at Calico Laine which would be perfect for creating a vintage look outfit.

Cotton Spandex : These cotton fabrics, which have a small amount of spandex in them, come in a variety of different floral designs and are a perfect weight for making a 50's circle dress. Partnered with dress net underneath to make the skirt stick out, the cotton spandex prints would be the ideal Dressmaking Fabric ideal for making a vintage style bridesmaid dress or as a wedding guest outfit. The plain version of this Dressmaking Fabric could also be used for making a 40's style high waisted pencil skirt.
Spots Cotton Prints : A large amount of the apparel at the fair featured a polka dot design which was particularly popular in the 40's and 50's. Whether you prefer a larger or smaller polka dot print, there is a big range to choose from in our Dressmaking Fabrics section. In the 40's and 50's polka dot prints were seen on stars such as Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe as well as being popular with Christian Dior when he released his hourglass dresses. Polka dot Dressmaking Fabrics are ideal if you are looking for a small girly print without a large complicated design.
Rose and Hubble Prints : Our Rose and Hubble Dressmaking Fabrics are ideal for making floral vintage style dresses if you do not want a fabric as heavy as the cotton spandex. They would make a gorgeous Audrey Hepburn style dress, giving it a modern twist by using pattern rather than a plain finish. As well as this, they could be used for halter neck dresses, circle skirts, pleated skirts and blouses.
