When I got in the car this morning to drive to work, it was foggy, miserable and absolutely freezing! Winter has definitely arrived and it doesn't seem to be leaving anytime soon. I only had a hooded jumper to wear and thought I could really do with a coat to keep me warm over the winter months. One of the most popular winter fabrics we have sold here at Calico Laine is our Melton Fabric and this would make an ideal coat for the cold months ahead.
Melton fabric traditionally came from the town of Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire. It has a raised nap to the fabric which creates a dense, non lustrous, smooth face that conceals the weave of the fabric. Traditionally it was made with wool however at Calico Laine we have a Melton that is made from 80% polyester and 20% viscose which has the same construction as a wool Melton but with a softer feel to it.
Melton has always been used for overcoats and jackets in the past and probably the reason it has been such a popular buy amongst our customers in the run up to winter. With eleven different colours to choose from there is a good range to pick from whatever your style preferences may be. My personal favourite is the Camel Melton Fabric which has also be a popular choice amongst our customers. This would be ideal to make a 60's style swing coat or even a poncho style coat and would look great with a pair of tan boots. (Something I happen to wear to work already!) Heavy winter coats can be quite costly in the shops so at £8.99 per metre the Melton is a great buy.

Until next time,
