The summer is such a cheerful and sociable time of year. The long warm evening encourages us to get out and do things, whether its trips away, family bbq's or meeting friends in your local beer garden. One thing is for sure, we all love having something nice and new to wear for such occasions and there is nothing better than making your own garments. My favourite part of sewing clothes is always choosing which Summer Fabrics I want to use.
Choosing the right Summer Fabric is so important but luckily, here at Calico Laine we have an abundance of choice. There are a few summer fabrics which I particularly love working with. Firstly, I just adore the Double Gauze Fabric, it has a natural texture and loose weave making it very breathable. It is a beautiful quality cotton that is ideal for multiple summer garments including dresses, blouses and skirts to name a few. I particularly like this summer fabric because it's nice and easy to work with making it ideal for both beginners and more advanced sewers alike. I recently make my daughter a summer dress in the pink, it washes brilliantly, if you hang it straight out of the washing machine it doesn't need ironing which is a bonus and very unusual for cotton.
Another summer fabric that I particularly like is Linen Fabric. Here at Calico Laine we do a fabulous quality Enzyme washed linen. I made a lovely pinafore dress for myself in the red. I had multiple compliments wearing it on a recent weekend away. Similar to the Double Gauze summer fabric, linen is made of natural fibres which is ideal for warm summer days or holidays in the sun as its breathable. The linen is very versatile, its ideal for casual clothing such as shorts or skirts but it can also be used for more formal wear, its an ideal weight for smart trousers and suits jackets too.
