We often find that many of our customers here at Calico Laine like to buy stretch Dressmaking Fabrics due to their ability to create a comfortable fit in a garment. Stretch fabrics usually feature a small amount of spandex in them which give the fabric the ability to move with your body which makes it comfortable when it is worn.
Stretch Dress Fabrics are usually separated into two different categories; two way stretch and four way stretch. A 4 way stretch fabric will stretch in all directions; across the length and across the width as well as along the bias. Two way stretch Dressmaking Fabrics however only stretch in one direction.
Here is a quick run down of some of the stretch Dressmaking Fabrics that we have on offer online and in our Neston and Liscard Branches:
Lycra : Lycra is a four way stretch and is well known for its exceptional elasticity. It is a synthetic fabric often used for dancewear and sportswear due to its breathability and flexibility. Once stretched, lycra Dressmaking Fabric will retain its shape even when it is stretched to several times it's original size. As with many stretch fabrics, lycra will not fray when cut so is easy to work with and we now stock over 30 different stunning colours so there is plenty to choose from
Lycra Jersey : This stretch Dressmaking fabric has a excellent drape to it and is extremely comfortable to wear. It is a smart and elegant fabric with a matt finish for those customers who do not like to wear fabric with a shine and is perfect for evening wear. We have sold this fabric to a number of customers looking to create bridesmaid dresses with a Grecian feel and it works beautifully. Lycra jersey is made from 80% polyester and 20% spandex.
Double Knit Jersey : If you are looking for a stretch Dress Fabric for colder weather, double knit jersey is ideal as it is a heavier weight fabric. It is perfect for winter weight dresses, skirts and tops and like other jersey fabrics, it is a very comfortable fit.
Stretch Dress Lining- Many stretch fabrics do not necessarily need a dress lining however if you are looking for a lining for jersey fabrics or fabrics with spandex in we stock a range of stretch dress linings. These are a mesh style lining and can be used alongside stretch Dressmaking Fabrics in order to maintain the stretch quality of your fabric whilst providing the structure and durability you need.
