This past week I have just moved into my first flat and there has been so much work to do including creating some window dressing for all of the windows. As it can be very expensive to buy curtains in the high street stores I decided to buy fabric from Calico Laine to create my own. This way I get some unique soft furnishings too! Many of you may not have thought to go to a UK Fabric Shop to make curtains yourself but if you are creative and can do simple sewing, you can easily make your own. Although Calico Laine is not a UK Fabric Shop that sells curtain and upholstery fabric as such, there are plenty of fabrics that when lined, can be used for creating curtains. One of the most luxurious fabrics to use is satin back dupion which is made to look like pure silk. This comes in a large range of colours so there is plenty to choose from. When lined with either our 54" or 108" polycotton curtain lining, these would look stunning against your windows. Another popular fabric for creating curtains is tartan. Although this can be more difficult to use as you need to match the pattern, it can be a bold look for your interior and looks great in a room that has plain walls. To finish off your curtains, Calico Laine stock a number of different curtain heading tapes to hang the curtains on a pole. The most popular of these is a 3" heading tape which has a pencil pleat finish. If you are not confident to make your own curtains you can always visit Calico Laine, a UK Fabric Shop, to purchase net curtains. Net curtains are an easy solution for when you are moving into a property as they have a slotted top to them so that they are ready to be hung straight away on curtain wire, net rods or tension rods. Net curtains come in standard drops, the height of your window and then the length can be whatever you need for the width of your window. We usually suggest doubling the width measurement to allow for a bit of gather so that the fabric is not straight against the window and will fall better. The majority of net curtains are white however if you like the light weight quality of nets but want a colour, you could always create your own nets using chiffon.
