[caption id="attachment_6326" align="alignleft" width="102"]jacqui Eastenders' star Jacqueline Jossa wore a stunning sheer gown to the NTA's earlier this week.[/caption] This week saw the annual National Television Awards take place in London, a night when stars of soaps, dramas and reality shows get together to celebrate the very best in the last year of television. As always at an event such as this, there was a glittering array of outfits sashaying up the red carpet and the one thing we noticed is that the sheer dress trend that was massive in Hollywood last year, is still going strong with our homegrown stars. Sheer dressmaking fabrics have been big news for a while and their popularity shows no signs of abating, particularly with the recent launch of Valentino's Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2014 collection earlier this week. This breathtaking collection of feminine, nature inspired pieces is a masterclass in sheer evening wear and it wasn't just Valentino who were showcasing sheer dressmaking fabrics at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week. The bridal wear collection by Ellie Saab was a stunning collection of pretty and classically glamorous gowns with sheer skirts featuring for a romantic and ethereal appearance. As with any fashion trend, when you get it right the effect can be breathtaking but be careful not to over-do any one trend. This is particularly important with the sheer trend as it is easy to get it wrong and reveal a little too much! Gwyneth Paltrow did a fine job of reminding us that less is more when she arrived at the premiere of Iron Man 3 back in April, wearing an Antonio Berardi gown with a white silhouette and sheer mesh panels down the sides. Unfortunately for Gwyneth, it was not her performance as Pepper Potts that was making headlines the next day, but her lack of under garments! [caption id="attachment_6328" align="alignright" width="93"]jennifer Hollyoaks' Jennifer Metcalfe was a little more risqué with this show stopping gown.[/caption] On the red carpet at the National Television Awards, many stars from our own shores made much better use of sheer dressmaking fabrics and showed off some stunning and elegant gowns. Eastenders star, Jacqueline Jossa wore an elegant flowery gown and gave a subtle nod to the sheer trend with a light, flowing chiffon overlay teamed with a pair of cream peep-toe heels. With her hair in loose glamorous curls, Jacqueline was elegant and stunning and definitely deserves her place at the top of the best dressed list. This is a classic style which can be worn by anyone who wants to showcase their figure whilst remaining classy and lady like. Jennifer Metcalfe of Hollyoaks fame was a little more daring with her almost see through sheer gown with some strategically placed embroidery. When putting together an outfit for any special occasion, sheer dressmaking fabrics are perfect for creating a striking evening gown and with our wide range of spectacular dressmaking fabrics the options are endless. Here are details of just a few of the gorgeous options of sheer dressmaking fabrics available to purchase online now. Chiffon - this popular fabric is sheer in appearance but is still a strong material which is suitable for a range of evening and bridal wear. Popular as a layering fabric, Chiffon is often used alongside many of our other dressmaking fabrics including Duchess Satin and Satin Back Crepe. Or for a more revealing look similar to Jacqueline Jossa, a cotton spandex will work well underneath. Cationic Chiffon - this iridescent, two-tone Chiffon fabric is designed to mimic the look and feel of real silk at a fraction of the price. As with other Chiffon fabrics, Cationic Chiffon is ideal for layering and is a popular dressmaking fabric for formal wear. Georgette - this sheer, flowing fabric is an excellent alternative to Chiffon when you require something with a little more weight for a finished piece that is less 'fly-away' than that achieved with regular chiffon dressmaking fabrics. Voile - a semi sheer fabric, Voile is suitable for many dressmaking projects but is most often used for blouses, shirts and luxury lingerie items. Voile is soft to the touch and can also be used for bridal veiling. Organza - this thin, plain weave dressmaking fabric is also very similar in appearance to silk and with its delicate and ethereal qualities it is a popular choice with brides to be and those creating princess style ball gowns and prom dresses. Organza is often used for adding volume to skirts and for adding decorative features to your gowns. Not only useful for evening gowns and cocktail dresses, Organza can be used in the manufacture of skirts, dresses and lingerie. Have you used any of our sheer dressmaking fabrics? We love to see pictures of your creations and ask you to upload them to our Facebook page to be admired. Until next time! Calico Laine
