Satin is one of the most widely used Bridal Fabrics and is most certainly one of our best sellers year after year, largely due to it's luxurious glossy appearance and smooth to the touch finish. Satin is a beautiful fabric to wear and feels wonderful against the skin and due to it's extravagant presentation is often used as a cost effective alternative to pure silk. The word satin actually refers to the weave of the cloth and the material itself can in fact present in many different compositions including polyester, viscose, silk fibres and nylon. There are also many different types of weave to choose from making satin one of the most versatile and sought after Bridal Fabrics on the market. Satin has been used in the construction of couture wedding gowns for many years, centuries in fact, and it's popularity shows no sign of wavering with more brides than ever choosing this opulent fabric for the most important dress they will ever wear. Satin Bridal Fabric is easily identifiable by it's silky smooth surface and dull back. Satin was first imported from the city of Quanzhou in China, known in medieval Arabic as Zayton and it is from here that satin acquired it's name. Many of the world's most famous and admired ladies have worn satin in some form on their wedding day including royal brides such as Queen Victoria and our own Queen Elizabeth II.

At 88 years old, Queen Elizabeth is still praised for her impeccable sense of style and is considered to be one of the best dressed women in the world, her choice of wedding gown certainly set a precedent for the immaculate outfits we have come to expect from our Queen. The future monarch married Phillip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh on 20th November 1947 wearing a gown of ivory duchess satin Bridal Fabric and with it's high neckline and tailored bodice Princess Elizabeth's beautiful gown has come to be one of the most lauded creations of all time. Designed by Norman Hartnell, Elizabeth's duchess satin gown was decorated with 10,000 seed pearls which had been specially imported from the USA. Duchess satin is still the most popular of all our satin Bridal Fabrics and is distinguishable from other satin fabrics by it's higher thread count resulting in a particularly lustrous finish and a wonderful body and weight. Once upon a time, duchess satin was available only to those blessed with great wealth but due to advances in textile manufacturing around the time of the Industrial Revolution, duchess satin has been worn by style conscious ladies from all walks of life for many years now.

Satin is certainly a luxurious Bridal Fabric in itself however it is often used as an alternative to silk. Silk is something of a specialised Bridal Fabric and is not yet a material that is widely available to most of us. However, satin is a wonderful alternative and in many ways is an even better option than silk. Silk is a lighter weight fabric known for it's floaty drape and due to it's lighter nature is best worn for ceremonies that take place during the warmer months. When opting for satin fabrics over silk your gown will benefit from the stiffer quality of satin meaning your garment will better keep it's shape and is capable of holding heavier embellishment than delicate silk. Then pop star Victoria Adams married her footballer beau David Beckham in a lavish and expensive ceremony at Luttrellstown Castle back on the 4th July 1999. True to form, the bride wore an exuberant gown of ivory silk by Vera Wang, paired with a glittering gown and perched atop their now famous thrones this wedding and it's attire was the epitome of the lavish excess that the couple have become famous for. Of course, when planning your wedding day, your budget is not likely to stretch quite as far as Mr. and Mrs. Beckham but that does not mean that you have to compromise on your dream gown. This look can be easily replicated at a fraction of the cost by using our beautiful duchess satin fabrics in shades of ivory or champagne.

Satin Bridal Fabric is available in a variety of weaves and an astonishing variety of colours which is perfect if you are looking to create an alternative style of bridal gown such as that worn by burlesque artist Dita von Teese when she married rockstar Marilyn Manson back in 2005. Being part of one of the most unconventional couples of the time Dita, real name Heather Sweet, did not disappoint when she arrived at her wedding ceremony wearing an eye-popping deep purple gown designed by Vivienne Westwood. Everything about the gown perfectly complemented Dita's unique sense of style and although the marriage was doomed to fail, lasting only one year, the awe inspiring gown is still one of the most famous celebrity dresses of all time and is currently on display at the V&A Museum as part of the 1775-2014 wedding dress exhibition. Although Dita's dress was created from gorgeous taffeta Bridal Fabric this is a look that can be easily recreated with a more subtle and less rustling satin fabric.
Satin Bridal Fabrics are available in a vast array of beautiful colour options, whether you are opting for a traditional big white gown or a more contemporary style of dress you will find the perfect shade for you.
