One of the most popular questions we are asked from our customers, on a daily basis, is what type of zips are suitable to go into a jacket. With the winter months now upon us, people are beginning to wear their heavier coats and jackets and many people find that when they pull their old coat out of the wardrobe, the zip may have broken and needs replacing.
A number of customers find that the slider part of the zip has broken and we get asked if this can be replaced. As a general rule, you cannot just replace the zip slider. Every zip is slightly different and it is very difficult to find a slider that will match the teeth on the zip allowing it to move freely up and down. Instead, we suggest that the whole zip is replaced.

If you are replacing a zip in a coat, you would need to buy an Open End Zip as this will open fully from top to bottom and will separate at the bottom. The most popular zips that we sell for jackets and coats are our Plastic Open End Zips. These have approx 5mm chunky teeth to them which gives a good aesthetic to a thick coat. They are available in a number of different colours and sizes range from 10" to 36" which means they can be used on both children's and adult's coats. These are also ideal if you are looking to replace a zip in a chunky sweater or knitted jacket.
As an alternative, our Nylon Open End Zips can also be used on coats and jackets. These have smaller teeth to them however they are just as strong as the plastic open end zips and would work equally well on a coat. With a larger range of colours to choose from, we find that the nylon open end zips are particularly popular.
If you are looking for a jacket zip that can open from both the top and bottom, we also stock Two Way Zips which are ideal for riding jackets, ski jackets and padded coats.
If you need any advice on Open End Zips please feel free to contact our sales team by phone or email and we will be happy to help.
Until next time,
