Skater dresses are in style this summer, and they are also a quick and easy project to make from scratch. Usually made from fabrics with some stretch to them, we recommend our Double Knit Jerseys which come in a range of colours to suit you. Here you’ll learn how to make a basic skater dress that’s perfect for the sunny weather, using a shirt you already own as a pattern base. What you’ll need: -          2.2 metres of 60” wide stretch fabric -          1 reel of cotton -          A Tape Measure -          A t-shirt or vest that fits you well -          Your waist measurement -          Your desired skirt length Step 1 First, you’ll make the skirt part of the dress. In our last update, we covered how to make a circle skirt – this time our skirt will be one complete piece as opposed to two semi-circles. Fold your 60” wide fabric in half so it becomes 30”. Skirts on skater dresses are generally about 18”, so refer to our previous update’s instructions and swap the 25” length for your desired skirt length – your waist measurement will, of course, remain the same! Make sure to place your markings on the fold so that your skirt is a single piece. Step 2 Take your remaining fabric and fold it in half. Lay your shirt flat on top of the fabric, making sure that the stretch of the shirt and the stretch of the fabric go in the same direction. Mark out the edges of your shirt on your fabric, making sure to add an inch on all sides for seams and hems. Step 3 Cut out your shirt pieces using the markings you just made as a guide. You should have two pieces – one for the front and one for the back. Pin the side edges together and sew using a zigzag stitch, then do the same with the shoulder edges. Try it on and make any needed adjustments to the neckline and armholes, and then hem both. Step 4 Pin the bottom edge of the vest to the waistline of the skirt. Sew these together using a zigzag stitch. Hem your skirt for a finished look and your skater dress is ready to wear. Make sure to share photos of your creations on our Facebook page!
