With winter setting in, our craft projects are changing to ones suitable for the holidays and the cold weather. It's important to wrap up warm in the coming months, and supposedly nearly half of our body heat is lost through our heads - so it's a good idea to wear a hat along with everything else when you venture outside this season. In today's post, we'll be covering how to make a simple fleece hat - one you can make using fabric from our fantastic range of plain and printed fleeces, guaranteed to keep you cosy this winter. What you'll need:
  • 0.5 metres of 60" wide Fleece Fabric
  • 1 reel of cotton
  • A tape measure
  • Your head circumference
Step 1 Firstly, you need to measure the circumference of your head. In our example, we'll be making a hat for someone with a head circumference of 25". Take your measurement and add 1" for seam allowances, then divide by 4. You will be making your hat out of five pieces of fleece, and four pieces make up the main section of the hat. You will need to either adapt the pattern we have created as an example, or draw your own: The measurement along the bottom of the pattern piece is the measurement that we were left with when we divided our head circumference by 4. You will need to cut four of these pieces. Step 2 Using your leftover fleece, you will need to cut a strip for the band of your hat. This strip should be your head circumference plus 1" (for our example, this would be 26") by about 4". Put this piece to one side. Step 3 Take two of your four identical pieces. With the right sides of the fabric together, pin along one curved edge and sew. Open it up so that you have two pieces sewn together and laid flat. Repeat this whole step with your other two identical pieces. Step 4 You should now have your four pieces made up into two pieces. With right sides together, pin these two pieces together along the curved edge and sew. Once you are done, turn the whole thing right side out, and you have the base of your hat. Step 5 Retrieve the long strip you cut earlier for the band of your hat. With right sides together, pin the two ends of the strip together and sew. Now that you have a complete circle of fleece, fold it in half along the length, so that the seam you just sewed is hidden. Step 6 Pin the two loose edges (not the folded edge!) to the edge of your hat base and sew.  With all of your seams now sewn and on the inside, you have a completed hat, ready to wear. Don't forget to share photographs of your finished creations on our Facebook page! Until next time, Calico Laine
