A sure-fire way of knowing when Christmas on the horizon is the return of one of television’s most successful TV shows Strictly Come Dancing. This series is already whizzing by and as always we have seen a wonderful array of dazzling costumes, dripping with sequins and sparkle. Since the show launched in May 2004, viewers have found themselves captivated by intricate choreography and dazzling costumes every saturday night. Put together by head designer Vicky Gill and her talented team of designers who work round the clock sourcing stunning fabrics and Haberdashery items to create the sensational costumes with which the show has become synonymous. When creating dance costumes, whether you are working on a huge production like strictly or a more low key performance for your local dance school, every aspect of the dancer’s costume is strategically placed to convey the feeling and emotions of the dance. Vicky Gill and her team will take a number of factors into consideration such as their colour, drape and fluidity. It is estimated that around 200 costumes are handmade each series using approximately 2000 metres of fabric and an astonishing one million crystals!

Of course, dance fabrics are an important part of the finished piece however it is the additional little touches that will make or break the finished costume design. Whilst designers pay close attention to fabrics and stitching, costume designers will also select and buy Haberdashery items designed to add that last, breathtaking touch to the costume. Over the years Haberdashery has played a key part in many of Strictly’s most famous costumes. In 2014, professional dancer Aliona Vilani showcased a breathtaking gold outfit, embellished with glittering gold and silver sequins trimmed with dark gold feathers. Feathers are always a popular choice of Haberdashery with the Strictly wardrobe team and with celebrities such as Beyonce and Cheryl Cole who have been spotted on the red carpet wearing glamorous feathery dresses. Feathers are not the only item of Haberdashery that regularly features in the programme; tassels are also a very popular choice both with the Strictly cast but with latin and ballroom dancers all over the world. Sequins are of course a staple of the Strictly costume department for both male and female dancers. Contestant Daisy Lowe wore a figure hugging red piece for the launch show accessorised with tiny red sequins.
We carry a wide range of Haberdashery items suitable for accessorising dance costumes and also for accessorising your Christmas party outfits.
