Now that most of you have probably taken down your Christmas decorations you may want to freshen up your home interior for the new year. One of the quickest ways to give your room a face lift or new feel is by adding cushions, home furnishings and updating your curtains. Making your own cushions can be a really simple project to have a go at and here at Calico Laine we have all the Haberdashery items you need to complete your new home finishing touches.
For making the main part of your cushion you can use a number of fabrics however cotton fabric is easy to work with and can be a great fabric to choose as this comes in patterns and plain colours giving you a lot of choice. If you are looking for a high end look on your cushions you may want to opt for a taffeta or satin fabric however be aware these may be harder to clean than a cotton fabric. To make your cushion on the sewing machine you will need essential Haberdashery items such as pins, machine needles, thread and scissors to cut out your fabric. If you are new to sewing you may need to purchase these items and these can be bought in both our retail and online store.
Cushions can be as simple or as difficult as you like and can include a zip or be made with an envelope style opening that does not require a zip. The best zips for cushions can be found in our Haberdashery section and these are nylon dress zips. Once again, these come in a large range of colours and sizes so you are bound to find something to suit. If you are making a large amount of cushions, our beige and black bulk buy cushion zips are ideal however if you are just making a couple of throw cushions, dress zips can be purchased individually. Other Haberdashery items that may be useful for decorating your cushions are piping cords which can be covered with a contrasting or matching fabric and sewn around the edge of your cushion to finish it off. Other furnishing braid is also available along with ric rac, lace, ribbons and other trimmings to create a feature on a plain cushion.
