Everybody who sews knows that you cannot do any sewing without thread and it is important to choose a good quality thread to work with to ensure the quality of your garment or item. At Calico Laine we stock a few different brands of thread however in my opinion, I would always opt for Gutermann Threads as these are a leading name in the haberdashery world and are guaranteed by Gutermann themselves not to knot, tangle or break when you are sewing. Gutermann Threads are great for your everyday sewing and can be used for any kind of dressmaking in any fabric choice; with their sew-all thread a particular popular choice for many dressmakers. Sew-all thread can be used with any fabrics whereas the Gutermann cotton thread is specifically for sewing with cotton fabrics. The sew-all thread is available in hundreds of different colours and can be purchased in different sized reels from 100 metres up to 1000 metres for the most popular colours including white, black, red and navy. Something that we are often asked for by customers is an extra strong thread for sewing on buttons or for working with particularly heavy fabrics such as furnishing material. An ideal thread for these types of tasks is Gutermann Top Stitch thread with is very strong and durable This thread cannot be broken by hand and needs scissors to cut through it. Traditionally this is used for sewing the tops of jeans and for decorative top stitching on garments but can be used for other applications. The only downside to this thread however is that it is only supplied on reels of 30 metres which is not enough for some projects and therefore a few reels need to be bought at a time. Recently however, we have added a new Gutterman thread to our range which will help out with this problem. Gutermann extra strong thread is similar to top stitch and can be used for similar applications however it is available on a reel of 100 metres which is more practical for some. Gutermann extra strong thread, like top stitch is great for sewing denim and jeans materials and any 'heavily-stressed' seams. It can be used for repair work and for any heavy woven fabrics or canvas and leather upholstery covers. Gutermann recommend sewing this thread with a universal needle size 70-100 and state that it can be used with a thin needle for material protection.
