Here at Calico Laine we have a huge range of Dressmaking Fabrics to choose from, to ensure that your Dressmaking projects are successful! Taffeta Fabric is historically made from from silk, but most of todays taffeta material is made from synthetic fibres (usually polyester or nylon) and is a smooth woven fabric, with a crisp texture. It usually has a tight weave that is smooth to the touch and has a shimmering appearance, and famously makes a ‘rustling noise’ when rubbed together. The word ‘Taffeta’ comes from Persian and literally means ‘twisted woven’. It is a medium to heavyweight Dressmaking Fabric that is easy to wash, and has great strength. It is a popular choice for many different types of garments, especially in women’s clothing, and is often associated with dressmaking ‘high-end’ or luxury items. Dressmaking items that most commonly use Taffeta Dressmaking Fabrics include: Wedding dresses – Taffeta can look beautiful on its own for the main body of the dress, or can even be used underneath Chiffon Dressmaking Fabrics to create a layered effect. Jackets/coats – Taffeta is a good option for light overcoats, and is perfect for coming into spring and summer. It can also be used as a lining for heavier coats, and is effective in being wind-resistant. Bags – Taffeta is often used to line ladies handbags due to its strength and durability. It is also reistant to chemicals and abrasion. Taffeta Dressmaking Fabric is also currently a popular choice in bedding accessories, and is used to cover items such as pillows and cushions. Here at Calico Laine we have a large range of colour choices in the taffeta material, including a beautiful selection of ‘two-tone’ colours.
