As a company, we receive a lot of our custom through fashion designers and dressmakers who are commissioned to produce high fashion items for style conscious clients who are wishing to reproduce catwalk designs at an affordable price. Although many clients may be working within a strict budget that does not mean that they wish to compromise on style or quality. It is for this reason that we keep such a close eye on high profile events in the fashion world including everything from awards shows to movie premieres and of course the many fashion weeks which take place throughout the year in all of the major fashion capitals of the world including Paris and Milan. As we stock such a wide range of dressmaking fabrics, it is necessary for us to keep a close eye on what is upcoming in the world of high end fashion in order for us to plan way ahead of time which of our dressmaking fabrics are going to be most in demand for the upcoming seasons. Now it is coming up to spring we are taking delivery of some gorgeous floral cotton prints and dressmaking fabrics in bright summery shades and it is time for our team of buyers to start hashing out which of the winter dressmaking fabrics we will need to be stocking up on for Winter 2014. Last week, it was the turn of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts to host New York Fashion Week, an opportunity for the biggest fashion houses in the world to showcase their Autumn/Winter 2014 collections to an audience of celebrities and journalists. Among the designers showcasing their latest creations were Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren and Marchesa.
There were many gorgeous designs sashaying their way down the New York City catwalk last week and one of the most prevalent dressmaking fabrics on display was fur fabrics. In his first season since his departure from Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs presented a collection of designs in neutral shades of tan, cream, light blue and lilac which included aspects of colour blocking and gradient patterns with models clad in faux fur bomber style jackets which were perfect attire for the snowstorm which coated New York’s streets with a thick layer of white. Always one step ahead of us mere mortals when it comes to fashion, many of the celebrities in attendance had already snapped up their own ultra fashionable pieces such as actress Debra Messing and singer Mary J Blige who sported fur heavy looks whilst viewing the collection at the Dennis Basso show. Organza dressmaking fabrics were also very much at the forefront of Marc Jacobs’ procession of increasingly fascinating pieces amongst long knit tunics and elegant dresses with layers and layers of ruffles and during the week of most miserable weather, the collection seemed more relevant than ever compared to the spring/summer pieces which are starting to pop up in high street stores.
Ralph Lauren presented a collection of beautiful womenswear which including some breathtaking, red carpet worthy pieces crafted from silk dressmaking fabrics in varying shades of pewter. There is good reason why Ralph is one of fashions most revered designers and he certainly showed his credentials by experimenting with signature touches including dramatic capes and experimenting with contrasting dressmaking fabrics. One of Ralph’s most stunning pieces was an evening gown in a pale silvery pink with a slightly pinker lining. Contrasting your dressmaking fabrics is a great way of adding an element of interest to your designs and placing your own unique stamp on your creations. As well as the gorgeous evening wear, Ralph Lauren also included a range of fabulous new pieces for his signature Polo by Ralph Lauren collection which included skirts of leather dressmaking fabrics and more casual dresses in shades of grey and mauve including versions crafted from knit jersey dressmaking fabrics and wool paired with fringed suede bags and cardigans and jackets in eye catching neon palettes.

Staying with the theme of gorgeous, glamorous evening gowns Marchesa stole the show with a glamorous collection of evening and cocktail gowns utilising the most opulent dressmaking fabrics. Inspired by traditional highland dress the opulent designs showcased a palette of rich colours including shades of gold and orange. Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig of the massively successful fashion house used a variety of dressmaking fabrics including gorgeous silk chiffon with embroidered flowers and pearl embellished bodice. Another show stealing design was the red Chantilly dress with metallic accents and a veil of two toned chiffon dressmaking fabrics. The Marches collection was largely made up of column dresses that flowed beautiful, almost like water but also embraced more streamlined silhouettes and cocktail dresses with floral cutouts and embroidered crystals. It was not only the designs on the Marchesa catwalk that were turning heads at NY Fashion Week but also the glamorous Marches clad celebrities who turned up to support their favourite label in a stunning array of gorgeous gowns. Katie Holmes was fabulous in her sheer, lace ’Notte’ cocktail dress in an appropriate shades of valentines red which was stunning against her shiny brunette hair. Lace dressmaking fabrics have been a major trend since Dolce & Gabbana embraced it in 2013. Ms. Holmes was joined on the front row of the Marchesa show by supermodel Naomi Campbell who unsurprisingly flawless in a similar sheer lace creation, this time in a shade of beautiful navy blue.
