The Met Ball is one of the biggest events in the fashion calendar and this years red carpet certainly did not disappoint. Based around the elegant Chinese theme, celebrities including Rihanna pulled out all the stops in an array of fantastical designs created from the world's finest Dressmaking Fabrics. East met west as American designers channelled the Chinese influence through their outlandish creations, as always there were certain stars who grabbed their share of the paparazzi attention for all of the right reasons whilst some failed to hit the mark with flaming headpieces and gowns in auspicious yellow all providing a talking point. Many of the red carpet favourites gave a nod to the Eastern theme in Dressmaking Fabrics of red and yellow with floral prints and barely-there gowns featuring intricate embroidery and embellishment being the order of the day. Perhaps one of the most talked about gowns of the evening was the huge creation worn by Rihanna. Featuring a fur trimmed cape and yellow Dressmaking Fabric adorned with swirls of gold, the completely hand made piece was the result of two years hard work by Chinese couture designer Guo Pei. Although this piece may be much too bold to duplicate and certainly not practical to wear, it is worth taking a lead from Rihanna and considering yellow Dressmaking Fabrics as an alternative to more muted hues, particularly for your spring/summer wardrobe. We carry a wide selection of yellow Dressmaking Fabrics such as our yellow viscose jersey which is popular for it's stunning drape and is ideal for creating skirts, tops and dresses particularly for wear during the warmer months. Famed worldwide for her impeccable sense of style the usually immaculate actress made a rare fashion mishap. Sarah's gown itself could have worked, created from a sustainable Dressmaking Fabric and designed by Sarah herself alongside H&M designers, the gown featured an Asian-inspired, hand embroidered red poppy print design however, it was the Philip Treacey headpiece that really turned heads, inspired by the enormous headwear of Chinese opera stars the piece has proved a real talking point with internet observers in particular. Other attendees chose to take a more subtle approach to this years theme and had considerably more success than in the fashion stakes than there attention grabbing contemporaries. Oscar winning actress Jennifer Lawrence stunned when she walked the red carpet in a beautiful black and floral gown by her favourite fashion house, Dior Couture. Featuring an on-trend midriff cut out and paired with a sleek up-do, Jennifer's less is more approach proved a hit again. Karlie Kloss played it safe in a classic LBD but with her statuesque supermodel frame the elegant Versace creation looked stunning, featuring a skirt of sheer Dressmaking Fabric and subtle embellishment the dress had the makings of a real statement piece without running the risk of becoming too over the top. Red was (predictably) the most popular colour for Dressmaking Fabrics with stars such as Gigi Hadid choosing the colour most often associated with Chinese culture. In China, red symbolises good fortune and joy and is the traditionally symbolic color of happiness. Adriana Lima opted for a Dressmaking Fabric in a darker and more dramatic tone for her beautiful Marc Jacobs creation. The gothic inspired creation was reportedly inspired by the work of fashion photographer Helmut Newton, paired with her dramatic blunt fringe and theatrical make up this was a high change of direction for the model.
