Even though we still feel like we are in the depths of winter with the cold chill in the air and people suffering from the flu, it will soon be Spring and people will be thinking of freshening up their homes and wardrobe. One Dressmaking Fabric which is ideal for this season is gingham. It is a traditional fabric which is easily recognisable and popular for a spring look.
Gingham is a simple, woven fabric traditionally made from cotton, polycotton or linen. It is usually a light weight to medium weight Dressmaking Fabric and the size of the checks/pattern on the fabric can range from small checks to larger 1" checks. Due to the fibres of the material being dyed before the weaving process, gingham can be used on either side of the fabric as it has the same appearance on both sides.
All over the world, from the UK to Africa, gingham Dressmaking Fabric is used for school uniforms and is always popular for school dresses. As the weather becomes warmer Mum's will begin thinking about changing their children's uniform from winter skirts into summer dresses and our 1/8 and 1/4 sized checks become particularly popular for this. This type of gingham comes in a range of colours so dresses can be made in whatever uniform colour you may need. As well as for children's uniforms, gingham is also a favourite Dressmaking Fabric for other children's items such as baby bedding, children's clothing and even children's accessories such as hair bobbles and bags.
Although gingham is primarily a Dressmaking fabric it can also be used for interiors and is popular in the spring season for lightweight kitchen curtains, children's bedroom curtains and table covers. Restaurants have used gingham for years as table covers and you will see many cafes and restaurants with this eye-catching check on their tables.
