This weekend sees the 60th annual Eurovision song contest take place in the capital of Austria, Vienna and tonight is the beginning of the competition with the first of the semi-finals. Eurovision was a staple part of my childhood as it was a tradition for the family to get together each year to watch the song contest and even as an adult I still get excited about the thought of Eurovision. I love the cheesy songs and reading some of the hilarious song lyrics through the red button service, back in the day it was on teletext, but best of all are the costumes made from all different Dress Fabric, sequins and glitter!

Eurovision is renowned for its loud and glitzy costumes and some are still remembered years later even when the songs aren't including Buck Fizz's velcro removable skirts, Abba's catsuits and Lordi's monster wings and masks. Various Dress Fabric has been used throughout the years including satins, leather, dress net and sequin satins.
A few years back my sister and I held a fancy dress Eurovision party for our friends. We picked a country out of a hat and gave it to each person as their country to dress up as to make the evening more fun. Countries that featured at the party included Ireland, Spain, France, Turkey, Greece and Israel. My country was Russia and I created a Russian spy costume using navy melton Dress Fabric trimmed with red bias binding. I then made some trousers using jersey fabric and topped my outfit off with a faux fur hat. Other costumes made use of sheeting for a Greek toga, stripy jersey Dress Fabric for a French gentleman and lycra jersey for a spanish flamenco dancer's dress.
If you are thinking of creating a Eurovsion party outfit there is a huge range of Dress Fabric at Calico Laine to help you. Why not share your pictures on Facebook with us as we would love to see them.
