After working with fabric and making my own craft items and cushions for many years, I feel it is about time I branch out into experimenting with Dressmaking Fabrics. However attempting to make an item from scratch by following a pattern is a daunting prospect, particularly the thought of having to open up a pattern and follow it from beginning to end. To ease myself in I've decided my first attempt at working with Dressmaking Fabrics will be making a child's summer dress. I have looked through the range of patterns we have here at Calico Laine and I have decided to make a very simple A-line dress using a Butterick 3772 Fast & Easy pattern.

We stock a huge range of Dressmaking Fabrics at Calico Laine such as Cotton Spandex, Satins, Chiffon, Taffeta and Silk, Linens and Chambray, to name but a few. My absolute favourite Dressmaking Fabrics we carry are the outstanding quality, 100% Cotton, Rose & Hubble prints that range from patchwork style prints, polka dots to simple flowery patterns which makes them perfect for Dressmaking, Patchwork, Cushion covers and much more. I have used these so often for my craft projects so I feel comfortable using them as a Dressmaking Fabric for my first project. I think these fabrics are a great choice for a little girl's dress as I want something pretty but easy for me to work with. A friend of mine who has been dressmaking for about a year now (and has now progressed onto princess dresses out of satin) also started with a simple summery outfit for her little girl, and her advice was to choose a lightweight cotton for my Dressmaking Fabric. I love how the cotton falls and drapes and because of the types of clothing I have chosen to make, it does not need any lining. Many dressmakers I know have used Rose & Hubble Cotton prints for child's dressmaking and I personally think this are the most successful for this type of project.

If this little dressmaking project works, I think I will make a few more child's dresses but may decide to experiment with many other types of Dressmaking Fabrics we have available. Wish me luck and keep posted to our Facebook page to see my results.
