Chiffon Dressmaking Fabric is a lightweight , plain woven sheer Dressmaking Fabric which is woven using a yarn twisted with alternate S and Z twist, this technique is what gives the Fabric it's stretch and slightly rough to the touch, crepe like texture. Chiffon is considered to be a luxurious Dressmaking Fabric and has been used in couture fashion since as early as the 1700's, a time when Silk Chiffon was worn to symbolise wealth and status and was only available to the most elite members of society. Nowadays, Chiffon is an extremely popular, sheer Dressmaking Fabric which is used for everything from evening gowns, wedding dresses, luxury underwear and accessories such as scarves. Chiffon gives your designs a floaty and ethereal quality and is often used alongside other Dressmaking Fabrics such as Lace.

Back in the 1920's, the American stage and screen actress Lilian Gish was renowned for her exquisite fashion sense and Chiffon was perhaps her most preferred Dressmaking Fabric for show stopping gowns. Even today, Chiffon is still an extremely popular choice of Fabric with the superstars of music, stage and screen. Many of our most lauded celebrities can be seen floating their way up and down the red carpet swathed in gowns crafted from this elegant and luxurious Fabric and stitched by the hand of some of the most famous fashion designers on the planet. Last week the sun was shining for the biggest event in the movie business, the Cannes Film Festival. Traditionally, the festival is an opportunity for the biggest film makers in Hollywood to showcase their latest cinematic master piece to an assembled audience of their colleagues and movie critics; but in recent years, the festival has become less about the movies and more about the fashion. For the 2014 ceremony Chiffon was once again one of the most popular Dressmaking Fabrics on the red carpet. Gossip Girl star Blake Lively worked the red carpet on the arm of her handsome husband, Ryan Reynolds in an array of designer gowns including one jaw dropping Gucci Chiffon design. With a bustier style corset top and pleated skirt with burgundy Chiffon overlay, Blake looked impeccable in this striking gown paired with glittering Lorraine Schwartz diamonds and a simple braided hairstyle which worked to keep the focus on the gown's exquisite geometric hemline. To recreate this look, choose our excellent quality Chiffon Fabric in wine to portray the ultimate in style and glamour for your own special occasions.

Closer to home, we also saw Chiffon taking centre stage at last night TV BAFTA's at Theatre Royale in London's Drury Lane. Coronation Street star Jane Danson who plays Leanne Battersby looked a million miles away from her famous character in a beautiful floor length, column gown with diamante detailing in a stunning shade of midnight blue Chiffon. Jane accessorised beautifully with a glittering silver clutch bag and diamond stud earrings. Chiffon was, as always, a very popular Fabric on the red carpet, particularly with soap stars. Eastenders newcomer Maddy Hill who plays Nancy Carter took a massive departure from her characters typical East End style in a beautiful halter neck gown and with a simple, understated hair style and minimal accessories, Maddy looked every inch the small screen siren in a ravishing shade of red. Another star who utilised Chiffon for her red carpet outfit was soap stalwart Michelle Collins who received mixed reviews for her lace mini dress paired with a floaty two tone Chiffon train. The strapless dress by British based designer Ariella London in a beautiful shade of champagne was gorgeous against Michelle's lovely warm skin tone however, many fashion critics feel that the beautiful creation could have benefitted from a few extra inches at the hemline! Champagne is a very popular colour choice as it is flattering against most skin tones and to achieve a two tone effect, look towards our range of Cationic Chiffon Dressmaking Fabric for a stunning, iridescent finish which will add a point of interest to any of your formal garments.
Chiffon is one of our largest collections of Dressmaking Fabrics and includes the gorgeous two-toned Cationic Chiffon, traditional Polyester Chiffon and the closely related Georgette Fabric which is ideal for projects which call for a slightly heavier weight Fabric.
