When making your own dress there are some basic questions that you need to ask youself. Firstly are you following a pattern or you drawing/designing your own? Once you have decided what pattern you are going to follow the next step I would go to is deciding upon a choice of Dressmaking Fabric. Here is where things start getting a little tricky! There are simply so many different types of fabrics available. Below I will go into some points to consider when choosing your fabric:
  • Width of the fabric
  • Weight - is it suitable for what you are making? For example you wouldn't make a dress out of fleece!
  • Pattern - is the dress your making suitable for a pattern or would a plain fabric be better?
  • Price - I always say to customers if your going to take the time to make something then buy the best fabric you can.
  • Colour
  • Nap - certain fabrics have a nap and you need to follow it when sewing.
Once you have decided upon a fabric and pattern design you are pretty much ready to go. Be sure to check on the back of the pattern before ordering your fabric, as it will advise you on how much fabric you will need. It will also tell you what other accessories such as zips, threads and dress linings you may need.
