One of the best selling haberdashery items here at Calico Laine is our range of zips however many customers who ring us to Buy Zips are unsure as to which type of zip they need for their project. There are a number of different zips in our range and these are split into two different types; open end and closed end.

Open End Zips: Customers usually Buy Zips that are open ended if they need a zip to open fully from top to bottom and separate at the bottom. These can be used for jackets, coats and cardigans amongst other items. Our most popular open end zips are nylon and plastic open end zips. These fasteners are both as strong as each other, a question we are asked often, however the give different aesthetics to your garments. Plastic zips have chunky moulded teeth which look particularly good with chunky cardigans and heavy jackets whereas nylon zips have smaller 'spiral' teeth and are better in children's garments and lightweight anoraks.
Other zips in this category include metal, brass and heavy duty metal open end zips. Brass and heavy duty metal zips are most useful for leather jackets and heavier jackets and coats. Heavy duty zips are only available in black however brass and metal open end zips can be bought in a range of colours including navy, brown, fawn and khaki.
Closed End Zips: Customers who require zips that do not open fully at the bottom need to Buy Zips that are closed end. These are zips such as dress zips, concealed zips and jeans zips that have a stopper at the end meaning that the fastener will not separate at the bottom. Our smallest closed end zips start at 4" and our largest are 22". The size of these zips are generally available in 2" increments but if you require a shorter length in a more unsual size this can be created by sewing across the bottom of the zip with a bar tack. Closed end zips are available in a large amount of different colours so you are sure to find something that will match your fabric.
