As we continue documenting our favourite Bridal Fabrics, we come to discussing a material which is often overlooked by modern day brides. Taffeta is a fabric which many brides believe belongs in the 1980's and should remain there! However, taffeta is available in many different weights and can be an elegant and versatile material. Taffeta is a smooth, woven Bridal Fabric with a tight weave and is popular for it's lustrous shine and smooth finish. This is a fabric popular with brides who are aiming for a traditional, fairytale princess style of gown and has long been a popular choice of material for the bridal gowns of the rich and famous.

Possibly the most famous taffeta bridal gown in recent memory is that of Lady Diana Spencer, worn for her marriage to Prince Charles on 29th July 1981. Diana chose David and Elizabeth Emanuel to design her show stopping gown which was constructed from an ivory silk taffeta Bridal Fabric with a 25 foot train. To this day, Diana's bridal gown is considered to be one of the most famous dresses in the world. The gown was a closely guarded secret and was only revealed to the eyes of the world when Lady Diana stepped out of her car onto the steps of Westminster Abbey. Viewers and well-wishers were stunned by the enormous gown which was decorated with hand embroidery, sequins, and 10,000 pearls. Diana's gown is now part of the Diana : A Celebration exhibit which made it's final stop in Cincinnati in February of this year. Hundreds of Diana's admirers and fashion fans have turned up to view the historic dress, however there are only two people in the world who are allowed to handle the precious cargo. Graeme Murton and Nick Grossmark have stated the gown is deceptively light, most of the weight coming from the layers of tulle Bridal Fabric hidden beneath the skirts which is what gives this famous taffeta gown it's enormous shape and structure.

Diana is not the only beloved fashion icon that has worn a dress of taffeta Bridal Fabric on her big day. Jacqueline Bouvier wore an Ann Lowe creation constructed from 15m of ivory silk taffeta when she wed the future 53rd president of the United States, John F Kennedy in 1953. The dress designer Ann Lowe was an African-American courtier who designed and constructed many items for the rich and famous. However, due to the political climate during this era Ms. Lowe was sadly never credited by name for her work at the time, despite toiling day and night to ensure the dress was completed on time after a flood at the designers studio destroyed the original item, ten days before the ceremony took place. The dress was a traditional design with an enormous bouffant skirt, such was the fashion of the time and enhanced Jackie's perfect hourglass shape.
