If you’re looking for an easy but fun project to work on, a circle skirt is a simple and fast item of clothing to make, and can be adapted for any situation – a Circle Skirt created using our Rose & Hubble Cotton Prints would be perfect to wear in the summer weather, or why not use our Duchess Satins to make one to wear over a 1950s style petticoat for a special occasion. In this update you’ll learn how to make a circle skirt with two semi-circles of Fabric.
What you’ll need:
-         3.5 metres of 45†wide fabric
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 1 reel of Cotton
-         1 8†zip
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â A tape measure
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Your waist measurement
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Your desired skirt length
Step 1
Measure your waist and divide by 8; for example, a 36†waist would result in 4.5â€, and that’s what we’ll be using during this tutorial. You will also need to decide on the length of your skirt – for this we’ll be going with a 25†length.
Step 2
Fold your Fabric in half. Starting from one end, mark 26†along the salvage – the reason we are marking 26†is so that we have an inch to use for the hem of the skirt. From the end of the 26â€, mark the 1/8 of your waist measurement that you just took – this is essentially the centre of your waist. Mark another 1/8 waist measurement, then another 26â€.
Step 3
Using the centre measurement as a starting point, mark several points outwards at 4.5â€. These should line up with the previous waist measurements that you marked to form a small semi-circle.
Step 4
Using the semi-circle you just marked out as a new starting point, mark several points outwards at 26â€. This will create a much larger semi-circle and will line up with the previous 26†measurements you marked earlier.
Step 5
Cut along the semi-circles that you have marked. Pin the straight edges together and sew (making sure to leave room for your zip!). Hem your skirt and, optionally, add a waistband – this is a strip of Fabric as long as your waist in your desired width. Sew in your zip and your circle skirt is finished.
