In todays blog we are going tobe talking about the range of Taffeta Fabric that we stock here at Calico Laine, and how it can be used in your Dressmaking.
Taffeta Fabric was traditionally made from silk, however it is now more commonly made with synthetic fibres like polyester and nylon. It is famous for making a 'rustling' noise when it rubs together, and has a tight weave that is smooth to the touch with a shimmering appearance.
The word ‘Taffeta’ comes from Persian and literally means ‘twisted woven’. It is a medium to heavyweight fabric that is easy to wash, and has great strength.
Taffeta Fabric is most often thought of as a  high-end Fabric, and has many uses as a Dressmaking Fabric.
Here are just some of the options for usnig Taffeta as a Dressmaking Fabric:
- Bridalwear and formal wear - Taffeta can be used as a stunning two-tone layer under other Dressmaking Fabrics such as Chiffon, or can even look fabulous on its own for the main body of a dress.
- Bags - Taffeta is popular for ladies bags as it is resistant to chemicals and abrasion, and has a large amount of strength and durability.
- Jackets and Coats - Taffeta is the perfect choice for a lighter overcoat or jacket, especially through the spring and summer months. It is also a popular lining choice for heavier winter coats.
