I'm going to talk about Dressmaking and how it goes hand in hand with haberdashery. Any dressmaker will have a collection of good haberdashery items in his or hers sewing box. So below I will mention some the items of haberdashery that I always have in my sewing box.
  • Bias Binding: A must have item I always seem to use whenever I have my machine out.
  • Zips: These are now available in so many diferent designs and sizes, but they always get used when I'm creating a dress or skirt. The most popular zip I use in dressmaking is the concealed zip.
  • Threads: The absolute mainstay for any dressmaker. I tend to find that using a good quality threads really does work out better in the end. You can get cheaper threads but in my opinion you are better off using a moon thread or a Gutterman thread. Either of these makes are ideal for dressmaking with.
  • Buttons: The finishing touches to any good hand made outfit. Button have come a long way in recent years.
  • Scissors: These are a real must have for dressmaking. My advice with scissors is to buy the best pair that you can afford. A good pair of scissors with last you many years and offer you easy cutting providing you look after them. Here at Calico Laine we use the Fiskars Dressmakers for all our fabric cutting needs.
As you can see Haberdashery and Dressmaking really do go hand in hand. I hope this short but informative blog has been been useful to you.
